Post: Super Mario Bro’s

Introduction to the Original Mario Bros. Game (1983)

Before you jump into playing the original Mario Bros. game, let’s take a moment to understand its mechanics, objectives, and gameplay features. This classic arcade game, developed by Nintendo in 1983, introduced Mario and Luigi as Italian-American plumbers navigating a series of underground platforms filled with enemies, pipes, and hazards. Unlike later titles in the Super Mario series, this game is more about defeating enemies rather than side-scrolling adventure.

Game Overview

  • Genre: Arcade Platformer
  • Developer: Nintendo
  • Release Year: 1983
  • Players: 1 or 2 (Co-op Mode)
  • Objective: Defeat all the enemies on each stage to progress.

Gameplay Mechanics

The game takes place in a single-screen environment with different levels of platforms, pipes at the top of the screen where enemies enter, and a “POW” block in the middle of the stage.

Controls

  • Left/Right Arrow Keys (or joystick): Move Mario or Luigi
  • Jump Button: Make the character jump
  • No Run Button: Unlike later Mario games, you cannot run
  • No Direct Attacks: Enemies must be defeated strategically

How to Defeat Enemies

  1. Enemies spawn from pipes at the top of the screen and move towards the bottom.
  2. To defeat an enemy, hit the platform from underneath when they are walking on it. This flips them over.
  3. Once flipped, walk up to them and kick them off the screen before they recover.
  4. If not kicked in time, they will get back up, move faster, and become more dangerous.

Enemies

  • Shellcreepers (Turtles): Basic enemies that need to be flipped before kicking.
  • Sidesteppers (Crabs): Require two hits to be flipped (first hit makes them angry and faster).
  • Fighter Flies: Jump around and can only be hit when touching the ground.
  • Fireballs: Hazards that fly around the screen and must be avoided.

POW Block

The POW block in the middle of the stage can be hit to instantly flip all enemies on the ground. It can be used three times per level.

Tips for Success

  • Be strategic: Don’t rush! Observe enemy patterns before attacking.
  • Use momentum: Jumping helps you avoid enemies but can also be risky.
  • POW block wisely: Save it for emergencies or when multiple enemies are present.
  • Team up in 2-player mode: Work with Luigi in multiplayer to take out enemies efficiently.

Game Modes

  • Single-Player: Control Mario and clear levels alone.
  • Two-Player Co-op: One player controls Mario, the other controls Luigi. Players can work together or compete for the highest score.
