In today’s world, the fear of AI voice scams is a growing concern, especially given the rapid advancements in voice cloning technology. This technology has become so sophisticated that it can now be used to convincingly impersonate someone, even a child, to target their parents. To combat this, I’ve implemented a unique strategy for my teenagers’ phone communications. This approach was inspired by an incident involving a friend who was deceived by a scam text message, which he believed to be from his son. He was tricked into transferring $100 to an unknown account to resolve a purportedly urgent and perplexing situation. (social engineering.)
The mechanics of how this scam was successful are not difficult to grasp. Consider the typical low-level anxiety that plagues parents, always half-expecting to receive troubling news when their children are not within the safe confines of home. The scam’s credibility was further bolstered by the message starting with something as believable as a 19-year-old texting about a smashed phone. From there, the scammer just needed to exploit this vulnerability.
However, the scam was not without its flaws. We all ridiculed our friend for not probing further with basic questions, such as questioning why the funds needed to be transferred to a different bank account if it was the phone that was broken. He didn’t even attempt to call the number to confirm the identity of the person on the other end. In a way, losing £100 was a minor setback compared to what could have been a much larger loss. This experience undoubtedly sharpened his vigilance against potential future scams.

But what if the scam involved hearing your own child’s voice, perfectly cloned, asking for money? Would anyone’s defenses be robust enough to withstand such a voice cloning attack? I recall a conversation with the team from Stop Scams UK last year, who explained how scammers could extract a child’s voice from their TikTok account and then simply find the parent’s phone number to execute the scam. Initially, I misunderstood, thinking scammers would have to cobble together a message using existing social media sound bites – a seemingly difficult task if the available content was limited to, say, football commentary and K-pop. The possibility of AI being able to extrapolate complete speech patterns from a sample, which it indeed can do, hadn’t even crossed my mind at that point.
Despite these alarming possibilities, I believe there’s a straightforward way to counter such scams. When a supposed ‘kid-machine’ requests urgent help, respond with something unexpected, like: “Precious and perfect being, I love you with all my heart.” A real child would likely react with humor or sarcasm, whereas the AI would probably respond with a straightforward “I love you too.” It’s this kind of unpredictable human response that AI, as advanced as it might be, is still unable to replicate. The inability of AI to mimic these uniquely human interactions provides a layer of defense against such sophisticated scams.
