Game Intro and Description for “Drug Wars”

Introduction

Welcome to “Drug Wars,” a classic turn-based strategy game developed and published by John E. Dell in 1984. Originally written for IBM PC compatibles, this game thrusts players into the gritty world of drug dealing in New York City. With a mix of strategy, risk management, and a touch of luck, your goal is to navigate the treacherous underworld, outsmart the police, and turn a profit within 30 days.

Game Description

In “Drug Wars,” you start as a fledgling drug dealer in New York City with a mere $2,000 and 100 spaces in your trenchcoat. Your objective is to make the most money by buying and selling various drugs, including Cocaine, Heroin, Acid, Weed, Speed, and Ludes, across different boroughs like Manhattan, The Bronx, and Brooklyn.

Gameplay

Each day, you travel between boroughs, checking drug prices, making deals, and dodging the law. The game is a race against time and a battle against loan sharks, who provide crucial starting capital but demand quick repayment with high interest. As you progress, you can acquire guns for protection and extra pockets for more inventory, both randomly available during travels.

Your journey is fraught with danger, especially from Officer Hardass and his deputies. When confronted by the police, you can choose to get arrested, run, fight, or continue dealing. Each decision carries risks, including potential injury or death. Surviving these encounters may earn you cash rewards, but losing means starting over.

Random events such as muggings, unexpected drug sales, and fluctuating prices keep the game dynamic. Your ultimate aim is to maximize your earnings within 30 days. At the end, your final score is calculated by doubling your cash amount in millions, with a perfect score of 100 for amassing $50,000,000.

Legacy

“Drug Wars” has inspired numerous adaptations and variants over the years. Notable versions include Dope Wars for Windows by Beermat Software, which gained immense popularity, and Drug Wars – Underworld. The game has been ported to various platforms, including Android, iOS, graphing calculators, and even the Nintendo DS game Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Each version introduces unique elements, keeping the core essence of the original game alive.

Conclusion

“Drug Wars” remains a beloved classic for its challenging gameplay and strategic depth. Whether you’re a nostalgic fan or a new player, this game offers an intense and engaging experience as you navigate the high-stakes world of drug dealing. Can you outsmart the police, repay your debts, and emerge as the ultimate drug lord? The challenge awaits.
