Cyberattack on London Drugs: Data Released by Cybercriminals
Last month, the retailer London Drugs experienced a cyberattack on its corporate head office, leading to the theft of sensitive files by cybercriminals. After the company refused to pay the demanded ransom, some of the stolen data was released.
Distressing Situation for Employees
In a recent statement, the Richmond, B.C.-based company revealed that the compromised files might include certain employee information, describing the situation as “deeply distressing.” London Drugs was responding to a social media post by cybersecurity analyst Brett Callow, who indicated that the hacking group Lockbit had released what it claimed to be the company’s data.
Unwilling to Pay Ransom
London Drugs emphasized that it was “unwilling and unable” to pay the ransom demanded by what it referred to as “a sophisticated group of global cybercriminals.” The company is taking steps to notify employees whose personal information might have been compromised, offering them credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
No Impact on Patient or Customer Data
The company assured that there is no evidence to suggest that any patient or customer databases were affected by the breach. The attack, discovered on April 28, forced London Drugs to temporarily close all 79 of its stores across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The stores remained closed until May 7 as the company addressed the breach.
Reviewing Compromised Files
London Drugs is currently reviewing the files that were potentially stolen to determine the specific information that may have been compromised. Affected employees will be contacted directly regarding the details of the breach.
Part of a Series of Cyberattacks
This incident is part of a broader wave of cyberattacks, including what the B.C. government described as a “sophisticated” attempt by criminals to breach its systems. The ongoing threat of cybercrime highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and the challenges faced by organizations in protecting sensitive information.
London Drugs’ experience underscores the significant impact of cyberattacks on businesses and their employees, as well as the critical need for vigilance and proactive security strategies in today’s digital landscape.
