Java, PHP, or .NET: Which programming languages will earn you the most? Pay for some key tech roles is outpacing others, but one big job has surprisingly seen a salary decline in recent years.
Salaries for in-demand programming skills, including Java and PHP, are rising rapidly. According to the 2023 Tech Salary Report by Dice, tech salaries overall have grown significantly, with certain specializations experiencing more substantial increases. In particular, .NET, PHP, and Java developers are seeing increasing demand as businesses scale up their digital infrastructure.
In most programming language popularity indexes, JavaScript, Java, and Python are the most popular languages. This trend is supported by Stack Overflow’s 2023 Developer Survey, where these languages rank among the top three most widely used and sought after by developers globally.
Additionally, salaries for data-related roles have seen significant growth. Data scientists, data analysts, and business intelligence developers are all commanding higher wages, with salary growth rates over the past three years averaging around 15%. Technical architects and DBAs (database administrators) are also enjoying double-digit increases in pay.
Business-focused roles such as business analysts and project managers have seen modest salary increases compared to developer roles, according to a 2023 report by Hays, which highlights that while demand for such roles remains strong, the explosive growth in technology-focused roles has eclipsed them.
One of the few roles to experience a pay decline is that of IT director. According to Reed’s salary guide, IT director pay fell between 2016 and 2018 but has since climbed slightly. Overall, the average IT director salary has decreased slightly over the past three years, dropping from £89,200 to £83,600.
These rising salaries are matched by growing demand for professionals with these skills. According to Reed, the number of technology roles advertised has grown by 10% since the beginning of 2023. Specialist roles, such as data scientists (up 20%), .NET developers (up 13%), and BI developers (up 13%), have seen far greater increases in demand. The role of full-stack developers has also grown rapidly, with a 41% increase in job listings since the start of 2023, highlighting the broad demand for developers with multiple skills.
The data comes from jobs posted on Reed’s website between 2020 and 2023 and the advertised salaries.
Andrew Gardner, director of Reed Technology, commented:
“There are plenty of roles out there for candidates with mobile experience and front-end development. Alongside that, firms will also need people with cloud-based experience and storage skills. The impact of legislation such as GDPR is creating a lot of demand, with companies making sure they have the right skills, systems, and processes in place. As a result, roles in data are also growing.”
